Rooted in Principle: Reclaiming Ideological Identity in Nigeria Party Politics

ABSTRACT
Nigeria’s political parties often lack coherent ideologies, resulting in rampant party-switching driven by personal interest rather than loyalty to party principles and ideologies, thereby weakening democratic structures in Nigeria. Despite extensive discussions on party politics, limited research explores how ideological inconsistency affects voter behavior, governance performance, and political accountability in Nigeria. This paper investigates the need for reclaiming ideological identity in Nigerian party politics and its implications for good governance and nation-building. It is well-documented that parties with strong ideological identity attract only members who are aligned with their values, morals, ethics, and principles. Using Social Identity Theory as a framework, the study employs qualitative content analysis of scholarly literature to explore how ideology can provide consistency, accountability, and voter engagement. Findings indicate that the absence of ideology undermines party loyalty, promotes ethno-regional divisions, and obstructs sustainable governance. The paper concludes by recommending that Nigerian parties should adopt clearly defined ideologies to strengthen democratic consolidation.
