ABSTRACT
This paper investigates how entrepreneurial risk-taking and family influence shaped the creation and legacy of Pet Supplies Plus, a pet retail franchise founded in 1988 by Jack Loyd Berry. The research explores how strategic management decisions, informed by real-world experience rather than formal business training, laid the foundation for a business model that scaled nationally. More importantly, it analyzes how those decisions established a legacy of entrepreneurship throughout the founder’s immediate family. Drawing on a combination of literature review, industry analysis, and an in-depth family interview, the paper identifies “guts”, defined as strategic courage under uncertainty, as the central theme driving both the company’s formation and its generational influence. The study reveals that bold actions taken by the founder, including franchising innovation and personal financial risk, contributed not only to market success but also to the transmission of entrepreneurial values across multiple family members. These values include work ethic, independence, risk tolerance, and a preference for business ownership. By comparing these lived experiences to key themes from Rich Dad Poor Dad and family business literature, the paper offers insight into how legacy businesses can shape identity and opportunity. The findings have implications for strategic entrepreneurship, family business succession, and personal leadership development.
