ABSTRACT
This research explores how innovation and modernization can strengthen Alaska’s seafood processing industry and support long-term economic stability. It examines challenges such as dependence on foreign reprocessing, rising costs, and global competition, all of which have contributed to declining profits and employment. The study discusses how emerging technologies, including automation and artificial intelligence (AI), can improve the speed, safety, and efficiency of seafood processing operations. These innovations have the potential to expand in-state processing capacity, create more stable employment opportunities, and reduce Alaska’s reliance on overseas processors. The paper also highlights the importance of marketing and rebranding Alaska seafood to reinforce its reputation as wild, sustainable, and high-quality. By integrating technological advancement with strategic branding, Alaska can build a more resilient and competitive seafood industry that benefits both local communities and the state’s broader economy. The study offers practical insights for policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders seeking to strengthen Alaska’s seafood sector through innovation and market adaptation.
