Integrated Bracket Holder with LED Curing Light for Orthodontic Bonding

ABSTRACT

This paper presents the design and potential clinical application of a novel orthodontic bracket holder incorporating an integrated light-emitting diode (LED) curing unit to enable simultaneous bracket stabilization and adhesive polymerization during bonding procedures. The device consists of a conventional stainless-steel orthodontic bracket holder modified by attaching a miniature blue LED light source (450–470 nm) powered by lithium button-cell batteries through insulated wiring. The LED is positioned near the active tip of the instrument, allowing direct illumination of the bracket base while maintaining bracket stabilization throughout the curing process. The integrated design eliminates the need to alternate between a bracket holder and a separate curing light, thereby simplifying the bonding workflow. Continuous stabilization during adhesive polymerization may reduce bracket displacement, preserve intended bracket positioning, decrease chairside time, improve operator ergonomics, and potentially reduce the risk of salivary contamination during bonding. The current device is a preliminary prototype and has not undergone quantitative testing. Limitations include dependence on battery performance, the absence of calibrated light-intensity measurements, uncertain curing efficiency, sterilization challenges associated with integrated electronic components, and the potential increase in instrument bulk and weight. The proposed advantages remain theoretical and are based on clinical rationale. Further in vitro and clinical investigations are required to evaluate irradiance output, wavelength accuracy, degree of adhesive polymerization, shear bond strength, bracket survival rates, procedural efficiency, and long-term clinical reliability before widespread clinical adoption can be recommended.
