Freight Intelligence for the North: Developing a Data Aggregation Platform for Alaska’s Logistics Network

ABSTRACT
Alaska’s freight transportation system presents exceptional logistical and informational challenges due to its vast geography, seasonal variability, and limited infrastructure. This study explores the feasibility of developing a comprehensive data aggregation and synthesis platform to centralize multimodal freight information for Alaska-bound shipments. The proposed platform would integrate publicly available data on carrier rates, routes, schedules, and environmental constraints to provide consumers and small businesses with a transparent decision-support tool for comparing shipping options across modes such as air, barge, rail, and truck. Using an industry analysis and market feasibility approach, the research evaluates existing logistics databases and analogous consumer platforms (e.g., Travelocity) to assess scalability, data reliability, and user accessibility. Findings indicate that while logistical and climatic complexities make Alaska a challenging test environment, a centralized freight database could significantly enhance market transparency, reduce information asymmetry, and empower consumers and small enterprises in supply chain decision-making. The study concludes that a scalable, Alaska-prioritized logistics platform is both viable and expandable to broader Arctic and rural markets.
